About Iceland

When most people think of New York, they picture the bright lights of Times Square, towering skyscrapers, Broadway shows, and yellow taxis. And while the city certainly offers all of this iconic energy, there's so much more to discover!

For art lovers, it’s the home of the Met, MoMA, and a buzzing creative scene. For foodies, it’s a global kitchenβ€”from classic New York-style pizza to Michelin-starred dining. For outdoor lovers, there’s kayaking on the Hudson, strolls through Central Park, and hiking just a short drive away in the Hudson Valley. No matter what your passion is, New York has something for everyone.

From its diverse neighborhoods to its historic streets and hidden gems, New York doesn’t just welcome youβ€”it pulls you in and becomes a part of your story.

What to Expect

Language in New York City

English is the primary language spoken in New York City, but you’ll hear dozens of others as you exploreβ€”Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, and many more. Thanks to the city’s rich cultural diversity, many residents and service providers are multilingual. Most tourist attractions, signs, and menus are in English, and basic English is widely understood in hotels, restaurants, and public transport areas.

Currency

The official currency in New York City is the United States Dollar (USD). Bills come in denominations of $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100, while coins include 1Β’ (penny), 5Β’ (nickel), 10Β’ (dime), and 25Β’ (quarter). It’s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases, tips, or places that may not accept cards.

Credit Cards & ATMs

Credit and debit cards are widely accepted across New York City, including in taxis, shops, restaurants, and even some street vendors. Visa, MasterCard, and American Express are the most commonly used. ATMs are easily accessible throughout the city in banks, convenience stores, and subway stations. Just be sure to notify your bank before traveling to avoid any issues with international transactions or withdrawal limits.

Safety

New York City is generally safe for travelers, especially in popular tourist areas like Manhattan, Brooklyn Heights, and Central Park. That said, it’s wise to take common-sense precautions: keep your belongings close, avoid poorly lit or unfamiliar areas at night, and be aware of your surroundings. The city has a strong police presence and emergency services are easily reachable by dialing 911. Always follow local guidelines and use licensed transportation services for added peace of mind.
