Table for One: How to Stop Being Afraid of Solo Dining

NYC truly can be an introverts dream. With endless restaurants, cafés, and bars, there are so many incredible spots to enjoy a meal alone. Just know - no one actually ever cares that you’re by yourself. So whether you’re testing the waters before a solo trip, looking to make dining alone more exciting, or just craving a night out with yourself, this guide has you covered!

As the wise Carrie Bradshaw once said

Instead of being afraid of the idea of a life alone, I'd better sit down and take that fear to lunch.”

Step 1: Choose a restaurant you’re genuinely excited about. This can be a spot on your never-ending Google or BeliEats saved list, your favorite restaurant in your neighborhood, or a hard spot for reservations. The goal is to WANT to go because if you’re excited about the food, the rest will fall into place.

Step 2: Sit at the bar, this is the perfect middle ground of being alone yet surrounded by people. You don’t actually feel alone because you can chat with the bartender or people around you. It’s less intimidating to make conversation. You can start up a simple chat like “what are you drinking?” or “that looks delicious, what did you order?”

If you’re not interested in sitting at the bar, I find my favorite spots are facing a window - perfect for people watching!

Step 3: Bring something to keep you entertained. This can be a book, crossword puzzle, or anything that will keep you entertained while there. I love bringing a book because it kills 2 birds with 1 stone. I feel productive and i’m entertained.

Step 4: Don’t overthink it! Like I said, most people either don’t notice or care. And if they do, they’re probably impressed you enjoy your own company. Not everyone can say that!

Here are some of my favorite spots to dine solo in New York City…
